What is assisted living?

The Assisted Living Federation of America defines assisted living as a long-term care option that combines housing, support services and health care, as needed. Assisted living is designed for individuals who require assistance with everyday activities such as meals, medication management or assistance, bathing, dressing and transportation. Some residents may have memory disorders including Alzheimer's, or they may need help with mobility, incontinence or other challenges. Residents are assessed upon move-in, or any time there is a change in condition. The assessment is used to develop an Individualized Service Plan.

When should I consider assisted living?

Certain situations and signs may indicate it might be time to consider alternative living arrangements. Generally speaking, families and seniors begin to consider alternatives when it becomes difficult for the elderly family member to carry on important activities of daily living without significant support and assistance from others.

How is the St. Angelus different from other assisted living communities?

The St. Angelus is the most beautiful, home-like assisted living setting in San Angelo. It has been described as one of San Angelo's hidden treasures! The small size of the St. Angelus makes it a very personal, resident-focused community. For persons who prefer more privacy, elegance, and personal care, the St. Angelus is the right choice. Other assisted living communities have an appearance more similar to a nursing home. The St. Angelus monthly rate is all-inclusive, in that there are no add-on fees or hidden charges for any services. For example, other communities charge a fee for meals to be brought to the room and picked up. At the St. Angelus, it is purely the resident's preference where they would like to eat their meals. The St. Angelus welcomes small pets. The St. Angelus permits smoking outside only. Residents may smoke on their personal balcony or porch. Finally, the St. Angelus is locally owned and operated rather than a large corporate chain. It offers the most reasonable price in the most beautiful facility. How do I know what type of care option is best for me or my loved one?

If you need no assistance with daily activities such as dressing, eating, and bathing you might consider an independent living community, while those needing some assistance, including cognitive, would be best served in assisted living such as the St. Angelus. At the far end of the spectrum, nursing homes cater to those with significant health-care needs.

The following assistance is available at the St. Angelus:

— Staff available to provide 24-hour assistance with activities of daily living if needed

  • Three meals a day and snacks between meals
  • Housekeeping services in residents' living units
  • Scheduled transportation available to residents on fairly short notice
  • Nursing visits weekly, and available on call at no additional charge

How do I pay for assisted living at the St. Angelus?

Assisted living is generally a "private pay" situation. Medicaid and/or Medicare do not offer payment for assisted living. However, a person may utilize their health care benefits, as necessary for additional health related services IN an assisted living setting. Additionally, a person may utilize long-term care insurance to assist in the cost of assisted living if they have need of assistance for two or more Activities of Daily Living (ADL's).
